Where it runs

Page rail on narrow layouts.

Why it is used

The narrower predecessor to the 160x600 wide skyscraper, dating from an era of 800-pixel-wide fixed layouts where 40 extra pixels of rail genuinely mattered. It survives mainly in long-standing placements that were never re-specified, and most ad servers still list it for backwards compatibility with those slots.

What to watch for

Largely legacy, with even thinner demand than 160x600 — which is itself thin. If a rail slot can take either, accept both and expect nearly all of the fill to come from the wider unit. Building a new placement around this size means accepting that it will frequently go unsold.

File weight for standard display is commonly specified at around 150 KB initial load, but publisher specs vary and the figure that governs is always the one written into the insertion order. Check it before trafficking rather than after a creative is rejected.
