Where it runs
Above the masthead or immediately below the site navigation, occasionally repeated at the foot of the page.
Why it is used
The classic desktop banner and still the default top-of-page unit. Because it usually sits above the fold it tends to record high viewability, and it is well supported by every ad server and exchange.
What to watch for
Too wide for phones, so a desktop-only campaign built solely around 728x90 loses the majority of modern traffic. High viewability also does not mean high attention — top-of-page banners are the most banner-blind position on the web, and CTR reflects that.
File weight for standard display is commonly specified at around 150 KB initial load, but publisher specs vary and the figure that governs is always the one written into the insertion order. Check it before trafficking rather than after a creative is rejected.
