Why it is used
The premium desktop brand unit. Its scale makes it genuinely hard to ignore, and it typically sells at a significant premium over a leaderboard in the same position. Often sold directly rather than programmatically.
What to watch for
Requires a wide viewport, so it needs a fallback for narrower desktop windows as well as for mobile. Its file weight is also the highest of the standard sizes, which makes it the unit most likely to hurt page performance if the creative is not properly optimised.
File weight for standard display is commonly specified at around 150 KB initial load, but publisher specs vary and the figure that governs is always the one written into the insertion order. Check it before trafficking rather than after a creative is rejected.
