Why it is used
The original web banner, and the size the industry was built on. Still supported by most ad servers for compatibility with long-standing placements.
What to watch for
Effectively legacy. Demand is very thin, most advertisers no longer produce it, and a slot restricted to this size will struggle to fill. New placements should use 728x90 or 300x250 instead.
File weight for standard display is commonly specified at around 150 KB initial load, but publisher specs vary and the figure that governs is always the one written into the insertion order. Check it before trafficking rather than after a creative is rejected.
